Adding Fractions Narrative Assessment

Learning Observed

Today after a 20 minute learning workshop on adding fractions with common denominators, Katara chose to complete a follow up worksheet. She was able to independently complete the worksheet, adding fractions with common denominators (e.g. 2/7 + 5/7 + 2/7 = 9/7).

Evidence of learning

Katara was able to independently add “like” fractions. Can she identify the improper fractions next?

Key Competencies/Vision Principles

Katara is developing her Capabilities in Maths. She chose to independently complete the follow up task for fractions in learning time and in one day (Managing Self, Participating and Contributing). Katara was able to Think about fractions and add 2 or more fractions with common denominators (Using Language, Symbols and Text).

Next Learning Steps

Identify improper fractions. Add fractions with different denominators. Share learning with home.

Narrative Assessment - iExperience - 30 March 2016

Learning Observed

During an iExperience session, Katara and her group were learning about the life cycle of a butterfly.  They watched a short video, had a discussion and then were given a set of pictures to cut out and  glue into their iExperience book.

Evidence of learning

Katara demonstrated her understanding of the life cycle by gluing the pictures in the correct order.

Key Competencies/Vision Principles

Katara was connecting with others in her group when learning about the life cycle of the butterfly.  She was curious and asked questions to help with understanding.  Katara demonstrated managing self to independently cut out the pictures and glue them into her book within the time given by her Learning Coach.

Learning Observed

Today Katara completed a Gloss Numeracy Assessment with me. In the Addition and Subtraction part she used the strategy “counting on”. For the Multiplication and Division part she used the strategy “counting all”. In the Fractions and Proportions part she did not know a strategy to use to work out this problem.

Evidence of learning

Katara did not need to look at the counters hiding under the paper to work out the problem. Instead she was able to use a counting on strategy in her head.

Key Competencies/Vision Principles

Katara showed she was at Stage 4 for Addition and Subtraction, Stage 3 for Multiplication and Division and Stage 2-4 for Fractions and Proportions. She was able to recognise the numerals for the questions (Using Language, Symbols and Texts). Katara is developing her Capabilities in Mathematics. She was able to Think of strategies in order to work out the math questions.

Next Learning Steps

Explicitly teach using making ten as a strategy for working out Addition and Subtraction problems. Explicitly teach skip- counting as a strategy for working out Multiplication and Division problems. Share Learning with home.

Narrative Assessment - iExperience - Term 4, 2015

Learning Observed

This iExperience involved turning “Trash” into something “Flash”. They started with a piece of cardboard and had to create a photo frame to for their superhero photo. We had lots of scraps of cardboard, cellophane, tissue paper, wool and fabric bits for the Learners to use to create this.

Evidence of learning

They have used “trash” to create this frame. Isn’t it starting to look flash!

Key Competencies/Vision Principles

They are developing their CURIOSITY by thinking about what scraps would be good to cut up to put on their frame (THINKING). They had to work by themselves and ensure that they got everything finished in time (MANAGING SELF).

Next Learning Steps

What else is “trash” that I could create into something “flash”? Ensure I have glued everything down properly and painted all the parts thoroughly. Share learning with home.

Today Katara chose to wrote about her Grandparents.  She set to work readily and expressed her thoughts and ideas with ease.

Katara was able to write simple sentences. She attempts new words using main letter sounds.

Today Katara completed a Mathematics Gloss Assessment. She solved her addition problem by counting all on her fingers. Katara then solved the multiplication question by counting all as well. She was unable to solve the Proportions and Ratios problem.

Evidence of learning

Katara has got a strategy to solve some of the questions. I wonder if she is learning others on Mathletics?

Katara is developing her Capabilities in Mathematics. She is using many different problems solving strategies to figure out the questions (Thinking). Katara is able to read and process the questions (Using Language, Symbols and Texts).
